My Transformation Blog – Day 18 – Legs!

I was on the early shift this morning so started work at 6am. I didn’t bother doing my a.m cardio as I had done my double spin class the night before so felt that there was no need to do it this morning. For some reason I was thinking about my training all day, how I was going to train, the intensity, the exercises etc. Leg days are always a challenge and so I think visualising the workout in your mind helps to you to mentally prepare and helps get your body ready for the exercise. I believe leg days are more about the mind than the muscles. They can take a real beating so it is usually your mind that gives in before your legs really reach true failure. Yes it hurts, yes its uncomfortable but you just have to man the hell up, put your mind elsewhere and just get the reps done! My Leg workout was the following:

  • Barbell Back Squats – 3 sets of 10 reps increasing the weight each time
  • Barbell Back Squats – 3 sets of 20 reps with 2-3 second negatives
  • Hamstring Curls – 4 dropsets of 16-18 reps
  • Leg Extension – 4 dropsets of 16-18 reps
  • Single Leg extension – 2 sets of 10 reps
  • Dumbell Straight Leg Deadlifts – 3 sets 15-18 reps
  • Kettlebell Walking lunges – 3 sets to failure

I was training at my works gym so I had to deviate from the actual plan that is on the hardcore trainer mainly because there wasn’t half of the equipment I needed. I did the squats instead of leg press. I really struggle with squats at times as I find my lower back starts to give out before my legs do so it puts me off my workout a bit. I didn’t go crazy with the weight as I wanted to concentrate on my form and get as low as possible as well as keep the tension through the legs.

The hamstring curls and leg extensions were tough but I am used to them now and I am slowly starting to be able to push myself further. The kettlebell lunges at the end were the real killer for me though! I would walk across the gym turn around and come back which in total is about 20 steps (it’s not a very big gym!) but that was more than enough to finish my legs off completely. The last couple of reps I could feel my legs shaking and unstable until the last rep I just had to collapse to my knees as I could not stand any longer. As sick as I felt though I was happy I could push myself to that point. I got my protein shake down me and jumped on the cross trainer for 20mins for my second lot of cardio.

I got home and just had to lie on my bed for about half an hour as my legs were just killing and I just felt absolutely drained! I could have easily fallen asleep there but I had to get up and have a shower and sort dinner as my sister, niece and parents were coming round to my girlfriend and I. My sister lives in Scotland so I only see her every so often so it was nice to see her and my niece who seems to get more and more clever everytime I see her!

I love leg days as it helps to teach me so much about myself and how I am able to comtrol my body and push it way beyond its comfort zone! I still have a long way to go I know that and it will take a lot of training to get there but I am excited for the journey and to put my body to the test.
